Immunotherapy

  • SCIT (subcutaneous immunotherapy)
    • Allergy shots help your body build its natural resistance to the effects of pollens, dust mites, mold spores, animal dander and insect venom
    • It is the only treatment currently available that changes the immune system and prevents new allergies and asthma. Research shows allergy shots reduce health care use and costs from prescription medicine use, office visits, and hospitalization.
  • SLIT (sublingual immunotherapy- new offering)
    • There are two kinds of SLIT- FDA-approved tablets for specific allergens, and allergy drops
    • The FDA-approved tablets are available for ragweed, grasses, and dust mites only.
    • Allergy drops- There are currently no FDA-approved SLIT liquid (drops) formulations. While allergy shots remain the gold standard, SLIT drops can be a good option for those unable to get allergy injections.
  • ILIT (intralymphatic immunotherapy- new offering)- Intralymphatic immunotherapy (ILIT) is a new method of administering allergens by ultrasound guided lymph node injection. This method consists of a series of three injections given four weeks apart. Research has shown this method to be roughly equivalent to five years of allergy shots for certain allergens.
  • OIT (oral immunotherapy)- COMING SOON

Note: SLIT (allergy drops) and ILIT, while effective, are off-label use of FDA-approved products for SCIT. They are therefore not covered by insurance at this time, but are available as cash-pay services.
